A page can earn a citation in Perplexity and be invisible in ChatGPT. If you own the business or lead its marketing, that is the choice in front of you: **ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews first**, not some imaginary single channel called “AI search.”

Cited-domain studies find that ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews overlap on only [about 14% of URLs](https://digitalconfex.com/generative-engine-optimization-geo/). That is not a rounding error you can fix by putting “AI-ready” in a content brief. These engines retrieve pages differently, select different parts of them and credit different sources. Work that clears one engine’s gate may do nothing at the next.

I’ll compare the three on four decisions that matter: retrieval, visible citations, freshness and what you can control. Then I’ll give you a test you can run before spending money on the wrong fix. My default winner for a business already visible in Google’s index is **Google AI Overviews first**. Perplexity and ChatGPT have clear cases of their own, but neither gets first priority just because a dashboard rolls all three into one visibility score.

## How each contender finds a source

### ChatGPT: first it has to decide to search

ChatGPT can answer without retrieving a page. That is where its fabrication risk lives: one estimate puts that risk at [18–55% when no browsing happens](https://ziptie.ai/blog/how-does-chatgpt-choose-its-sources/). When a prompt does trigger browsing, ChatGPT reformulates the question, retrieves results through Bing, evaluates snippets, fetches pages and synthesizes an answer with clickable citations. In one 80-million-query Semrush sample, [about 46% of queries triggered live search](https://ziptie.ai/blog/how-does-chatgpt-choose-its-sources/).

That gives a site two chances to lose before anyone judges its writing. The prompt may not trigger a fetch. Or a fetch may happen without finding the page. **No fetch, no page-level citation.** A brand mention generated without retrieval is not proof that ChatGPT read the page you worked on.

Crawler permissions add another gate. OpenAI runs [three separate crawlers](https://www.anagram.ai/blog/gptbot-explained-how-chatgpt-crawls-sees-and-cites-your-site-in-2026): GPTBot for training, OAI-SearchBot for search and ChatGPT-User for live fetches. Blocking GPTBot does not necessarily keep you out of ChatGPT answers; blocking OAI-SearchBot can keep you out of ChatGPT Search. I used to tell clients to block everything AI on principle. I was wrong. If you want buyer citations, check which bot you are blocking before you congratulate yourself on having a tidy robots.txt file.

### Perplexity: retrieval is the starting line

Perplexity takes a search-first route. Its process parses intent, pulls [10 to 30 candidates from an index of around 200 billion URLs](https://www.rzlt.io/blog/how-to-rank-on-perplexity-a-2026-practitioner-playbook), reranks them for relevance, semantics, quality and time, then builds an answer with inline citations. A wire-level teardown found that it does not skip web search; more involved how-to questions can instead move into a Study mode with video.

That does not mean every retrieved page gets credit. [YouTube can be cited heavily while Reddit is retrieved heavily and then passed over](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/how-perplexity-actually-picks-sources-i-read-the-stream-not-the-answers/583769/?utm_src=newsraid.com). Retrieval gets a page into the room. Reranking decides whether it gets to speak. **Perplexity offers more citation slots, but it still makes pages earn one.** If your page is thin or stale, getting fetched is not the same as getting cited.

### Google AI Overviews: index first, passage second

Google AI Overviews starts with crawlable pages in Google’s index and familiar ranking signals. It then breaks a question into related sub-queries, pulls passages that address them and assembles an answer. One cross-platform analysis puts the average at [9.26 sources per Overview](https://thestacc.com/blog/cross-platform-geo/).

That passage step explains why a ranking report cannot tell the whole story. In an Ahrefs study of 863,000 keywords, only [38% of cited pages ranked in the top 10 for the original query](https://news.designrush.com/ai-overview-citations-drop-ahrefs/), down from 76% in July 2025. About 31% ranked from 11 to 100, and about 31% ranked beyond 100. The Overview can seek an answer to a sub-question the buyer never typed. A page that handles that sub-question may be cited without ranking for the head term.

**Index eligibility gets you considered; a useful passage gives the Overview something to use.** For the fuller method, read [How to Get Cited in AI Overviews and ChatGPT: A Passage-First Guide](https://groas.com/post/how-to-get-your-business-cited-in-ai-ove).

## The four axes that decide where to work first

Here is the comparison I would put beside a content plan. It separates the problem of _being found_ from the problem of _being credited_. Treating those as the same task is how teams spend a month rewriting a page their target engine never fetched.

![Three robot librarians choosing different books in response to the same question](https://pub-87da24ecbbfc4c3bad6875f3aa013712.r2.dev/generated-images/d380fe5e-e79b-4b67-80fd-ab16d5a1c1fe.png)

| Axis | ChatGPT | Perplexity | Google AI Overviews |
| ---------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Retrieval path | Browsing must trigger; Bing retrieval and live fetch can follow | Live retrieval on each query, followed by reranking | Google index, then sub-queries and passage selection |
| Visible credit | Typically 3 to 6 clickable citations when browsing | Typically 5 to 10 inline citations | Around 9 sources on average, including pages outside the top 10 |
| Freshness | A live fetch matters more than a newly changed date | Recent, maintained pages have an advantage | Older pages can still supply the right passage |
| First control to check | Crawler permission and Bing visibility | Page depth and genuinely current information | Index eligibility and clear answer passages |

### Retrieval: can the engine reach you at all?

When ChatGPT browses, Bing visibility matters. One analysis says [about 92% of its agent queries route through the Bing Search API](https://thestacc.com/blog/cross-platform-geo/); another finds [87% of citations matching Bing top organic results](https://ziptie.ai/blog/how-does-chatgpt-choose-its-sources/). If Bing cannot see a page, polishing its opening paragraph is not my first move for ChatGPT.

Perplexity retrieves on each query and reranks what it finds. Google begins with its own index but can select a passage for a related question rather than the exact query you are tracking. That is why a Google top-10 report and an AI Overview citation report need not agree. **Check the retrieval path before editing the copy.** A page must be eligible to enter the contest before better prose can help it win.

### Visible credit: a citation slot is not a click

Perplexity commonly shows [5 to 10 inline citations](https://www.rzlt.io/blog/how-to-rank-on-perplexity-a-2026-practitioner-playbook). One 34,000-response sample found a [13.05% brand citation rate there versus 0.59% for ChatGPT](https://thestacc.com/blog/cross-platform-geo/). ChatGPT’s browsing answers tend to show fewer sources, around 3 to 6. Google AI Overviews averages 9.26, with [49% of sources coming from domains 15 years or older](https://thestacc.com/blog/cross-platform-geo/).

What the deck calls broad visibility, I call slot math. More slots can mean more opportunities to appear, but a citation alone does not tell you whether the reader noticed it, clicked it or bought anything. Use citation presence to diagnose selection. Use your business outcomes to judge whether that presence was worth pursuing. **Do not turn a citation count into a revenue claim.**

### Freshness: update the answer, not just the date

Perplexity is the least forgiving of stale information in this comparison. About half its citations point to content from the previous year; its citation decay starts [two to three months after publication](https://www.rzlt.io/blog/how-to-rank-on-perplexity-a-2026-practitioner-playbook), and pages updated in the last 30 days get cited more. That makes current specs, prices and supporting details worth checking on pages where those facts drive the answer.

The fix is maintenance, not a monthly ritual of changing an H1 and schema date while leaving the page untouched. Correct the information that has changed and make the answer easy to find. Google can still draw on an older page if its passage answers the relevant sub-question. ChatGPT needs a fetch to use the current page at all; a newer publication date cannot force that fetch.

Formats also differ. YouTube is the [most-cited domain in AI Overviews at about 6% of citations](https://news.designrush.com/ai-overview-citations-drop-ahrefs/), up 34% in six months. That is a reason to look at what an Overview actually cites for your questions, not an instruction to make a video for every page. **Refresh facts where freshness changes the answer.**

![A stopwatch beside an aging blog post while recently updated pages are selected](https://pub-87da24ecbbfc4c3bad6875f3aa013712.r2.dev/generated-images/b3970460-b748-43fa-8782-31da267fc12f.png)

### Control: fix the gate before the passage

This is the part most writing advice skips. Google’s guidance, as discussed in this [AI search overview](https://digitalconfex.com/generative-engine-optimization-geo/), does not call for llms.txt, tiny “AI chunks” or special schema to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Crawlability and semantic HTML still matter. In one Ahrefs analysis, [97% of valid llms.txt files received zero requests](https://www.simpleaispot.com/2026/09/how-to-get-cited-chatgpt-ai-overviews.html) during the measured period. I would not make that file the centre of an AEO plan.

For Google, check that the page is indexed and eligible for a snippet: `noindex` and `nosnippet` can remove it from Overviews. For ChatGPT Search, check [OAI-SearchBot permission and Bing visibility](https://adamarant.com/en/blog/how-to-get-cited-in-google-ai-overviews-and-chatgpt-in-2026). For Perplexity, look beyond access to whether the retrieved page gives its reranker a current, substantial answer. If you have not checked access, start with [Before You Write for AI Search, Check Whether Its Crawlers Can Read Your Site](https://groas.com/post/before-you-write-another-page-for-ai-the).

Then separate _selection_ from _absorption_. Selection means the engine can find and choose the page. Absorption means the page contains an answer it can use. Q\&A formatting alone [did not improve absorption](https://www.simpleaispot.com/2026/09/how-to-get-cited-chatgpt-ai-overviews.html). A concise answer with a date, a named entity and a relevant number gives the engine something more specific to work with, provided those details belong in the answer. **First open the gate. Then improve what is inside it.**

![A site gate open to one AI crawler and closed to another, with a clear answer passage beyond it](https://pub-87da24ecbbfc4c3bad6875f3aa013712.r2.dev/generated-images/6ffa985f-8996-4965-a1fc-b52519a3a9ea.png)

## Run the 10-question check before choosing an engine

**Question:** When buyers ask about what you sell, which engine cites your site, and which one does not?

**Setup:** Write 10 questions in your customers’ words, not your category language. Include the kinds of questions relevant to your business: price, “near me,” “best for,” “how much,” “who fixes” or “what causes.” Ask them in ChatGPT with browsing on, in Perplexity and in Google where an AI Overview appears. Use fresh conversations, the same questions and the same day. Stay logged out where you can, and do not steer an answer with follow-ups.

**Controls and measurements:**

1. Ask each of the 10 questions in each engine. Repeat the set two days later.
2. Record every cited domain and whether yours appears with a link. Note when an answer has no visible citation or no AI Overview appears; do not count either as a citation win.
3. Sort your results into four useful groups: absent everywhere, present only in Perplexity, present only in Google AI Overviews or present only in ChatGPT. Keep mixed results visible rather than forcing them into one group.
4. After making one engine-specific fix, repeat the same questions in 30 days. Compare citation presence before deciding whether to open a second front.

**Expectation:** I expect many businesses to see a split rather than a clean shutout. The engines use different retrieval paths, and sources can churn: one analysis reports [40–60% of cited sources turning over month to month, with only about 30% of brands visible on back-to-back identical queries](https://adamarant.com/en/blog/how-to-get-cited-in-google-ai-overviews-and-chatgpt-in-2026). The repeat matters because one answer is a poor basis for a month’s work.

Search Console [groups AI Overview clicks with classic search clicks](https://adamarant.com/en/blog/how-to-get-cited-in-google-ai-overviews-and-chatgpt-in-2026), while ChatGPT can tag traffic with `utm_source=chatgpt.com`. Neither replaces the citation sheet. If you are absent everywhere, investigate permission and indexing first. If one engine alone misses you, inspect that engine’s path before rewriting every page. If citations rise after your fix, you have a reason to keep working there; if they do not, revisit the diagnosis rather than announcing that “AI search” is broken.

![Lab notebook with three test tubes labelled ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, beside a citation checklist](https://pub-87da24ecbbfc4c3bad6875f3aa013712.r2.dev/generated-images/a56aaf9c-7e41-4502-89a6-3a8b179dceb3.png)

## Verdict: Google first for most indexed businesses, with two clear exceptions

**For an owner or marketing lead whose buyers already find the business through Google, I would fix Google AI Overviews first.** You have an existing index path to inspect. Make the relevant page eligible, identify the sub-question an Overview is answering and tighten the passage that addresses it. For a local or services business, keep hours and service areas accurate too. This is a more defensible first move than commissioning three parallel AEO projects.

**Pick Perplexity first for ecommerce when current product information and comparison questions are the obvious gap.** Its search-first process gives a maintained page a chance to compete for a visible slot, while stale specs or prices can undermine the answer. The store that cannot keep those facts current should fix them before chasing citations.

**Pick ChatGPT first for B2B or SaaS when Bing visibility, crawler permission or a thin answer page is the bottleneck.** Browsing has to happen, the page has to be reachable and the answer has to justify one of fewer citations. Check those conditions before producing five more pages that repeat the same pitch.

At groas, I want prompts, citations and crawler visits separated by engine, not flattened into a generic visibility score. That is how I decide which fix deserves attention. Run the 10-question check, choose the retrieval path you already have a foothold on and test one change. **Do not open a second front until you know what happened on the first.**

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can a page get cited in one AI engine but not show up in the others?

Yes. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews find and credit sources through different retrieval paths, and cited-domain studies find ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews overlap on only about 14% of URLs. A page can earn a citation in Perplexity and be invisible in ChatGPT.

### Why does ChatGPT sometimes mention my brand without linking to my website?

ChatGPT can answer without retrieving any page, and a brand mention generated without retrieval is not proof that it read your page. No fetch means no page-level citation. When browsing does happen, ChatGPT reformulates the query, retrieves through Bing and synthesises an answer with clickable citations.

### Should I block GPTBot in robots.txt to control whether ChatGPT cites my site?

Blocking GPTBot does not necessarily keep you out of ChatGPT answers, because OpenAI runs three separate crawlers: GPTBot for training, OAI-SearchBot for search and ChatGPT-User for live fetches. Blocking OAI-SearchBot can keep you out of ChatGPT Search, so check which bot you are blocking before assuming all AI access is cut off.

### Does Perplexity cite every page it retrieves?

No. Perplexity pulls 10 to 30 candidates from an index of around 200 billion URLs and then reranks them for relevance, semantics, quality and time. Retrieval only gets a page into the room; reranking decides whether it gets cited, so a thin or stale page can be fetched without earning an inline citation.

### Why does my page get cited in a Google AI Overview even though it does not rank in the top 10?

Google AI Overviews breaks a question into related sub-queries and pulls passages that address them, so it can cite a page for a sub-question the buyer never typed. In an Ahrefs study of 863,000 keywords, only 38% of cited pages ranked in the top 10 for the original query, with many ranking from 11 to 100 or beyond 100.

### How often should I update pages to stay cited in Perplexity?

Perplexity is the least forgiving of stale information: its citation decay starts two to three months after publication, about half its citations point to content from the previous year, and pages updated in the last 30 days get cited more. Update the information that has actually changed, such as specs and prices, rather than only editing the date.

### How can I test whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews cite my website?

Write 10 questions in your customers' words, including price, 'near me', 'best for' and similar question types. Ask them in ChatGPT with browsing on, in Perplexity and in Google where an AI Overview appears, using fresh conversations, the same questions and the same day, logged out where possible. Record every cited domain, repeat the set two days later and sort results into groups by which engine cites you.

### Which AI search engine should a business optimise for first?

For a business whose buyers already find it through Google, Google AI Overviews first is the recommended default, because you already have an index path to inspect. Perplexity is the better first choice for ecommerce when current product information is the gap, and ChatGPT first for B2B or SaaS when Bing visibility, crawler permission or a thin answer page is the bottleneck.
